Systems without feedback cannot improve. Establish three levels of feedback:

  2. Transformers are not brains: The Transformer’s attention mechanism differs structurally from human attention at the computational level
  3. Training vs. development: The human dual system formed through lengthy evolution and individual development, while the LLM’s “dual system” is engineered through training—their robustness may be fundamentally different

10.2 Three Open Questions

Question 1: What is the optimal design for metacognitive routers?

Current routing mechanisms are mostly based on heuristic rules or simple classifiers. A more fundamental question is: is it possible to train a general metacognitive module that can flexibly decide when to intervene, like human System 2?

Question 2: Can we train truly debiased models?

Current debiasing strategies are mostly post-hoc remedies. Is it possible to eliminate systematic biases during the training phase itself? Gigerenzer would object to this goal—he would argue that in specific environments, certain “biases” are actually optimal strategies.

Question 3: Is the dual system the only architecture?

Human cognition may have more than two systems. Stanovich (2011) proposed a tri-process theory in Rationality and the Reflective Mind[15], adding a “reflective mind” layer distinct from System 2’s “algorithmic mind”—responsible for higher-level goal-setting and value judgment. If tri-process theory is more accurate, current AI architectures may still be missing a critical layer.

Kahneman’s legacy is not a set of formulas, but a lucid awareness of the limits of human (and artificial) rationality—and a methodology for making the best decisions within those limits.
